Band Surabaya ini muncul di tahun 93. Nama Slowdeath dipilih secara asal oleh Grog (vokalis Slowdeath) yang bingung ketika mau main di kampusnya ITS. Band ini sebelumnya tidak punya nama sewaktu mendaftarkan diri disebuah event di ITS. Terus terang saya tidak setuju nama ini, dan sempat protes. Tapi saya sendiri tidak mempunyai usulan nama yang lebih keren. Grog memilih / menyebutkan nama ini karena dia sangat suka dengan lirik Slayer “Angel Of Death”. Slowdeath main pertama kali september 93 di kampus ITS dengan mengcover tiga lagu Terrorizer. Waktu itu SD hanya bertiga saja, saya & Grog juga Farid (drumer). Saat main di ITS ada basis additional yang membantu.

Setelah penampilan perdana yang bikin heboh itu, SD mempunyai basis, Sjafri. Bareng Sjafri, SD lebih sering tampil meskipun sebatas kampus kampus di SBY. Dua tahun kemudian, karena Sjafri mulai sibuk dengan kuliah, posisinya sementara digantikan Do-one. Do-One adalah gitaris yang pernah main bareng Farid di Blukuthuq. Mulai era 95 ini, Slowdeath mulai menulis karya sendiri, yang pertama process of x-termination & yang kedua The Pain Remains the Same. Dua lagu ini akhirnya sering diputar di Radio Rajawali, yang sangat mendukung band-band extreme di SBY.

Awal ’96, Sjafri gabung lagi di SD. Tapi kali ini saya ‘paksa’ untuk menjadi gitaris. Sjafri sebenarnya seorang gitaris yang bagus, tapi dia lebih memilih bermain bass. Karena kita semua sudah menyatu dengan Do-One, akhirnya Sjafri mau bermain gitar. Slowdeath lengkap ber lima, persis seperti yang saya impikan. Berlima , kita semakin bersemangat menulis lagu. Latihan digeber dua kali seminggu. Sering kali kita berlatih dalam kamar saya, modalnya cuman drum bekas pinjaman (pula) dengan hanya satu cymbal, ampli gitar 10w, ampli bass bikinan sendiri, dan ampli karaoke yang dicolok ke tape untuk gitar ke 2..vokalnya cuman teriak2 tanpa mike.

Enam lagu bisa kita selesaikan waktu itu. Ditambah dengan dua lagu sebelumnya, jadi total 8 lagu. Sayangnya keputusan akhir kita hanya merekam 6 lagu saja ; 4 lagu baru dan 2 lagu sebelumnya. Di tahun 96, scene metal SBY sudah cukup ngeri. Kita dan juga band2 metal SBY lainnya sudah seringkali tampil.

Album atau yang saya sebut Demo Tape I dari Slowdeath akhirnya direkam Live di Studio Natural , satu Shift (6 jam) hanya dihargai 65.000. Itulah biaya yang SD keluarkan untuk merekam Demo Tape I “From Mindless Enthusiasm to Sordid Self Destruction”. Terus terang dalam pemiihan judul lagu / lirik dan judul album , Grog adalah ahlinya. Grog selalu mempunyai obsesi untuk menulis lirik dengan kata2 yang sulit dalam bhs Inggris pula. Grog mempunyai ambisi untuk menjadi penulis lirik terbaik di scene metal Indonesia. Terbukti seorang peneliti dari America keturunan Yahudi bernama Jeremy yang kita kenal saat kita main di Jakarta ( Jakarta Bawah Tanah I ) menjadi kagum dan menjadikan lirik The Pain Remains the Same sebagai bahan tulisannya. Lagu ini, idenya datang dari saya dan Grog, dimana saya terinspirasi judul lagu Led Zeppelin “The Song Remains The Same”. Dalam lagu ini Grog menulis bahwa penderitaan yang di alami bangsa Indonesia pada saat masa penjajahan , masih tetap sama saja beratnya ketika Rezim Soeharto (Orde Baru) berkuasa. Jeremy kagum, karena SD berani menulis lagu seperti itu di jaman Orde Baru.

Pergaulan di SD bukannya adem ayem. Kita seringkali bertengkar, satu pertengkaran pertama yang saya ingat adalah pertengkaran saya dan Sjafri yang mengubah persahabatan kita. Waktu itu kita melatih lagu baru ‘One Dismal Day’, yang masih dalam tahap awal. Saya dan Farid berusaha menyelesaikan lagu ini, Grog hanya duduk saja santai. Sjafri entah kenapa justru merecoki bukannya membantu. Satu kata yang membuat saya tidak berkenan adalah ketika Sjafri mengatakan bahwa lagu ini gak enak. Saya membalas dengan kata-kata “Masio ga enak, tetap ta pakai lagu ini” . Pertengakaran ke 2 dengan Sjafri terjadi tahun 99, waktu itu Sjafri pengen mengubah style Grindcore Slowdeath menjadi lebih groove seperti Fear Factory. Saya tidak setuju dan mengusulkan dia membuat band baru saja. Keputusan terakhir waktu itu, saya memutuskan keluar dari Slowdeath. Tapi kemudian saya balik lagi untuk main di satu event, karena Sjafri tidak mau tampil waktu itu. Pertengkaran tidak saja terjadi antara saya dan Sjafri, tapi juga terjadi antara saya dan Grog. Ceirtanya waktu itu, kami tampil di Jakarta Bawah Tanah I. Grog berangkat dari SBY terpisah dengan kita. Akibatnya dia terlambat datang ke event tersebut. Kita main ber 4 saja, Do_One jadi vokalis dadakan. Setelah event itu saya bertengkar dengan Grog yang merasa dia tidak salah. Yang paling emosi saat itu atas kelakuan Grog adalah justru Farid. Farid usul pada saya untuk memecat Grog, tapi terus terang dalam hati saya waktu itu saya tidak akan memecat Grog. Alasan saya tidak mau memecat Grog karena dia penulis lirik yang sangat handal dan saya kagumi. Grog marah besar dan membakar semua lirik lagu baru & lama dipenginapan di Jakarta. Dan dia memutuskan untuk keluar. Saya tenang karena tahu, gak bakalan Grog keluar dari band ini.

Beberapa saat setelah pulang ke SBY, emosi Grog mereda dan dia balik bergabung dengan band ini. Waktu itu kita tiga kali bermain dengan Do-One sebagai vokalis, karena Grog sibuk menyelesaikan kuliahnya. Grog juga pernah bertengkar dengan Sjafri, waktu itu kita tampil di gdg Cak Durasim. Grog melakukan kesalahan dalam lagu ‘Represi’ dan dia sangat menyesal sekali di back stage. Sjafri dengan enteng bilang kalau gak usah disesali, maksudnya baik. Tapi Grog menanggapi dengan marah dan hampir saja memukul Sjafri.

Di tahun ’98, Slowdeath masuk ke studio untuk merekam album berikutnya. kita memilih untuk memakai studio Lasika. Alasan nya hanya untuk menjadi beda dengan band2 lain yang merekam di Natural Studio. Materi untuk album ke 2 ini terkumpul sembilan lagu. Dan kami merekam semuanya. Hanya sayang sekali saat mixing, dana kita hanya cukup untuk lima lagu saja. Akhirnya saya putuskan untuk merilis ke lima lagu itu saja dengan titel “Learn Through Pain”.

Di saat merekam album inilah, saya sadar kalau Farid bermain dengan sangat kacau untuk masalah tempo, ketukan dan juga pedal doublenya. Dari pengalaman ini, saya belajar banyak masalah tersebut, semuanya saya dapatkan dari teman baik saya Afif ( RIP ). Afif banyak memberi tahukan kesalahan-kesalahan dalam album itu.

Tahun 99, kita ditawari untuk ke 2 kalinya masuk ke Metalik Klinik. Pertama diajak bergabung dengan MK II, saya menolak. Alasan penolakan waktu itu karena materi band yang ada di MK II tidak sebagus MK I. Saat ditawari masuk MK III, saya mau karena band yang ada di MK III keren keren semua. Selain kompilasi ini, SD juga ditawari ikut dalam Tribute to Rotor. Saat mengisi kompilasi MK III, Farid usul untuk merekam ulang lagu Policy Of Fear. Saat merekamnya, karena saya sudah lebih paham masalah ketukan dan tempo, akibatnya, sekali lagi terjadi pertengkaran kali ini antara saya dan Farid. Akhirnya saya putuskan untuk Copy Paste data dari lagu Policy Of Fear dimana Grog bernyanyi dengan bahasa Indonesia dan mengubah judul lagu ini menjadi Represi.

Di tahun 2000, saya melanjutkan memixing sisa 4 lagu Learn Through Pain. Hasilnya saya jadikan album Propaganda. Untuk promosi album ini SD membuat satu pagelaran legendaris Slowdeath Live di Flower Cafe. Setelah event ini, dua personil SD ; Sjafri dan Do-One memilih untuk berhenti. DO-One ingin berkeluarga dan saya tidak ingat alasan Sjafri untuk keluar atau berhenti. 2001, SD mengajak Afif untuk mengisi posisi bass ; dan kemudian Erik ( Band : Penjahat sekarang Pulverizer) juga ikut bergabung di akhir 2001. Setahun kemudian kita menemukan sosok basis yang pas untuk band ini yaitu Garbo (Incerse). Formasi 2002 inilah yang merekam satu lagu untuk tribute Rotor. Formasi ini sempat menulis 5 lagu baru, sayangnya semua demo yang kita rekam hilang. Di 2002 ini saya juga mulai bergabung dengan Tengkorak. Resmi bergabung dengan Tengkorak tahun 2003. 2002-2004, Slowdeath masih aktif untuk main di event-event besar atau kecil. Hampir setiap 2 minggu sekali kita tampil. Tapi di era ini, saya dan Farid sudah tidak mempunyai hubungan yang baik. Saya kerap protes pada permainan Farid yang tidak semakin membaik, juga dengan attitudenya yang sangat mengganggu.
