Sawung Jabo pernah tergabung dalam kelompok yang pernah terkenal di Yogyakarta, yaitu "Kelompok Kampungan" bersama Bram Makahekum. Kemudian pada tahun 1976 dia mendirikan kelompoknya sendiri, "Sirkus Barock" yang embrionya antara lain adalah KAAS (Keluarga Arek-Arek Suroboyo) yang belajar di Yogyakarta dan juga mahasisiwa AMI dan ASRI (Akademi Seni Rupa Indonesia). "Sirkus Barock" sendiri pemain tetapnya antara lain Innisisri, Nanoe, Totok Tewel, dan Edi Darome, didukung musisi-musisi lain yang main bersama mereka. Pementasan konser "Sirkus Barock" selalu sarat dengan nuansa teatrikal, antara lain pentas "Kanvas Putih" di Taman Ismail Marzuki dan pentas "Tragedi" di Gedung Kesenian Jakarta. "Sirkus Barock" mengeluarkan tujuh album, antara lain Anak Setan (1975), Fatamorgana (1994), Jula Juli Anak Negeri (2001), Tur ke Sydney & Melbourne (1995 & 1996), dan album "Musik dari Seberang Laut" yang dimasukan dalam album kompilasi "Worldmusic" di Australia dengan judul "World Without Borders" (1997).
