Pada tahun 1950, ilmu fisika atom masih menjadi monopoli Amerika Serikat yang lima tahun sebelumnya menjatuhkan bom atom di Hiroshima. Baru pada tahun 1954, Presiden Eisenhower mengizinkan fisika atom diajarkan secara terbuka di perguruan tinggi. Baiquni tahun ltu memang sedang memperdalam ilmu fisikanya di Amerika Serikat. Terbukanya bidang "baru" itu tak dilewatkan begitu saja. Mula-mula, ia belajar di Laboratorium Nasional di Argonne, tujuh bulan. Kemudian, ia melanjutkan di Universitas Chicago, mengambil jurusan fisika nuklir. Di universitas inilah, pada 1964, ia meraih Ph.D.-nya. Sekembalinya ke tanah air Achmad Baiquni kembali mengajar di UGM Yogyakarta.

Pada tahun 1973, Achmad Baiquni ditunjuk menjadi Dirjen BATAN Jakarta hingga tahun 1984. Selain itu Prof. Baiquni juga pernah menjadi Dubes Indonesia untuk Swedia (1985-1988), Rektor UNAS, dan dosen IAIN-Syarif Hidayatullah. Prof. Baiquni meninggal pada 21 Desember 1998 pada usia 75 tahun.
