Blodwen sedang sibuk apa saat ini?
LEXY: Rekaman untuk album kedua. Kita sekarang lagi dalam proses pembuatan lagu-lagu baru yang lebih heavy, epic dan powerful lagi daripada album-album sebelumnya.
Bagaimana sejarah terbentuknya Blodwen dan siapa saja yang mengisi line up saat ini?
BERNICE: Awalnya Blodwen adalah band project saya bersama temen-temen SMA. Saya ajak mereka untuk bikin band rock yang banyak meng-cover lagu-lagu Japanese Rock (terutama band-band cewek rocker-nya) karena saya gak bakat nyanyi pop dan kebetulan memang saya suka kultur Jepang. Itu di tahun 2004. Trus di tahun 2007 Lexy gabung sebagai gitaris diband dan dia yang mengenalkan saya dengan Nightwish. Saya jatuh cinta sama musik symphonic metal sejak saat itu, dan kita banting setir jadi seperti yang sekarang ini. Kita dikontrak label Jepang Red Rivet Records ditahun 2010 dan meluncurkan album debut kita "Black Symphony" di pasar internasional.

Tapi ditahun 2011 semua member Blodwen berhenti kecuali saya dan Lexy karena mereka mau mengejar karir di bidang lain, untungnya gak lama kemudian Bayu Djody dan Cis gabung mengisi posisi bass dan drums. Tahun 2014 Indra Bayu join juga sebagai 2nd guitarist dan ditahun yang sama kita dikontrak label Eropa Crysella Records. Sekarang member Blodwen ada 5, yaitu saya (Vokal), Lexy (Gitar), Indra Bayu (Gitar), Bayu Djody (Bass) dan Cis (Drums).
Bagaimana respon Penikmat terhadap lagu dan band kalian?
LEXY: So far so good. Kebanyakan support dan lucunya agak kaget pas tau kita band asli dari Indonesia.

BERNICE: Hahaha iya, kita dapat respon yang cukup baik dari dalam dan luar negeri. Memang kadang ada yang salah mengira kita band dari negara entah mana karena liriknya yang kebanyakan ditulis dengan bahasa Inggris atau gaya musiknya. Tapi kita asli band Indonesia kok.
Apa genre musik Blodwen dan lirik lagu Blodwen mengupas mengenai apa ?
LEXY: Genre kita adalah Symphonic Power Metal, yang artinya kita menggabungkan musik klasik, heavy metal, orkestrasi dan unsur teatrikal didalam musik kita.

BERNICE: Semua lirik Blodwen bercerita tentang dongeng, fantasy, folklore, mythology, dan humanisme. Escapism lah istilahnya. Kita tidak tertarik dengan hal-hal berunsur SARA atau politik.
Apa saja band yang jadi influence musik kalian?
LEXY: Bisa dibilang Yngwie Malmsteen, Rhapsody of Fire, Blind Guardian, Helloween, dan Stratovarius. Itu untuk gaya permainan, style lagu dan power metal-nya.

BERNICE: Kalau boleh ditambahkan pastinya Nightwish, lalu kalau diluar metal kita terinspirasi dari teater musikal buatan Andrew Lloyd Webber, musik J.S Bach, Niccolo Paganini, dan Sarah Brightman. Kita juga banyak terinspirasi dari banyak composer film seperti Hans Zimmerman dan Javier Navarrete.
Bagaimana proses pembuatan album? apa ada kendala?
LEXY: Kendala utamanya waktu, karena masing-masing dari kita juga ada kerja dan tanggungan hidup, jadi menyempatkan waktu untuk fokus dalam pembuatan album cukup sulit dilakukan.

BERNICE: Setuju. Waktu dan uang. Yah itu kendala semua band independen sih hahaha proses pembuatan albumnya sih so far oke dan on schedule. Kita ada jadwal yg harus dipenuhi bersama label kita, dan kita udah menyelesaikan beberapa lagu baru. Dalam beberapa bulan kedepan kita akan merilis single baru yang akan ada di album kedua. Proses pembuatan album biasanya saya menulis melodi dan lirik, lalu saya bawa ke Lexy untuk di-aransemen. Terkadang saya bantu juga aransemen orkestrasinya. Dan terkadang Lexy buat riff gitar dengan chord dan struktur lagu yg kurang lebih rampung, lalu saya tulis melody line dan lirik diatas riff gitar Lexy. Proses pembuatannya selalu seperti itu.
Mengapa kalian menyukai genre Symphonic power metal ?
LEXY: Karena genre ini memiliki melodi terindah di dunia.

BERNICE: Menurut saya, Symphonic Power Metal memiliki 'magic' sendiri yg bisa men-"transport" pendengarnya ke alam dunia lain. Musiknya indah, tapi powerful. Cantik, tapi gak cengeng. Dan saya suka dengan yang seperti itu; saya harap yang mendengar musik kami juga bisa merasa masuk ke dunia ala Blodwen :)
Apa saja kegiatan kalian selain ngeband?
LEXY: Saya dan Bayu Djody adalah product specialist dan clinician di salah satu distributor alat musik di Indonesia. Kita banyak mengunjungi kota-kota di Indonesia untuk mengadakan klinik gitar dan bass dimana-mana.

BERNICE: Saya mengajar freelance vokal dan acting dibeberapa institusi dan sekolah musik di Jakarta sebagai dosen fakultas Performing Arts dan guru private. Indra Bayu dan Cis adalah anak kuliah musik di salah satu universitas yang saya ajar, mereka sedang berjuang mendapatkan gelar S1 di bidang musik. Seluruh member Blodwen tidak punya "day job" yang tidak berhubungan dengan musik, kita semua musisi 100%.
Bagaimana tanggapan orang terhadap band anda yang mempunyai personil wanita?
BERNICE: Sebenarnya sih tanggapan orang cukup baik, kita banyak di-support orang-orang yg tidak mempermasalahkan gender dalam bermusik. Cuma ya memang di awal-awal kita start ada aja yang "support" Blodwen karena gender saya, dan jujur bukannya senang saya malah merasa terhina. Kalau memang ada yang suka dengan musik Blodwen, ya sukalah dengan musiknya karena musiknya bagus, lagunya indah, atau kualitasnya oke, bukan karena gender vokalisnya. Itu penghinaan untuk semua kerja keras yang kami lakukan di balik layar.

Ada alasan kenapa disemua lagu Blodwen, saya bersikeras untuk terlibat. Semua melodi, lagu dan lirik Blodwen saya yg tulis. Jujur saja, saya benci sekali dianggap cuma sebagai "pajangan" di band cuma karena saya wanita. Wanita juga bisa kok bermusik dan turut andil dalam laju sebuah band metal. Di Blodwen, saya adalah vokalis sekaligus songwriter & lyricist, general manajer, website & artwork designer, marketing dan PR. Saya melihat Blodwen bukan sebagai hobi tapi ini memang pekerjaan saya. Ini jalan hidup saya. Jadi ya tentu saja saya harap dihargai bukan cuma karena saya kebetulan lahir sebagai wanita. Kalau saya lahir jadi laki-laki juga saya pasti bikin band metal.
Bagaimana scene metal d kota anda? Apa mereka mendukung Blodwen dalam berkarya?
LEXY: Scene metal di kota kita sebenarnya cukup bagus, apalagi beberapa tahun terakhir ini karena terbukti kita bisa mendatangkan banyak band-band metal internasional yg legendaris. Cuma yang kami masih sayangkan adalah scene metal lokal di Indonesia, bukan cuma di kota kami saja, masih sering mengkotak-kotakkan genre. Menurut saya, itu yang membuat kadang kita jadi sama-sama susah maju. Metal kan luas sekali genrenya, dan sebenarnya band-band di Indonesia banyak sekali yg berpotensi dan mengusung genre-genre yang masih jarang dilihat di scene metal disini. Mungkin akan lebih baik kalau scene metal di Indonesia bisa lebih netral dan variatif dalam mendukung band-band metal independen, tidak hanya satu dua genre tertentu saja.
Apa kalian ada kendala dalam bermusik?
LEXY: Kendala kami seperti yang tadi sudah dibahas: alat, waktu dan uang hahaha Blodwen adalah band independen dalam artian 'benar-benar' independen, yaitu proses rekaman dari nol sampai mixing dan mastering semuanya kita kerjakan sendiri. Tentu saja karena semuanya dikerjakan sendiri ya alatnya harus mencukupi. Nah membeli alat musik untuk manggung dan rekaman dengan kualitas bagus kan gak murah juga. Demi mendapatkan sound terbaik ya mau gak mau kita harus investasi di alat dan menyediakan waktu yang tidak sebentar juga. Apalagi member di Blodwen bukan lagi anak-anak muda yg tidak punya tanggung jawab masing-masing. Ada diantara kita yg udah berkeluarga. Jadi ya harus serius karena ini bukan band hobi.

BERNICE: Saya pribadi sih kadang dapat kendala dari pihak keluarga karena jujur saja saya tidak bisa dibilang 100% didukung bermain di band metal, terutama karena lagi-lagi saya wanita. Beberapa pihak punya ekspektasi tertentu terhadap saya karena gender saya; harusnya udah berkeluarga lah, settle down lah... sedangkan saya bermain musik ya karena ini karir yg mau saya rintis untuk masa depan, dan itu yg saya prioritaskan. Kadang jadi kendala karena kebetulan karir saya ini memang tidak bisa dibilang aman, tapi ya mau gimana? Tidak bisa bohong juga sama diri sendiri.
Apa pendapat kalian terhadap perkembangan musik metal di era ini ?
LEXY: Perkembangan musik metal sekarang sih menurut kami cukup baik. Sekarang sudah berbeda dengan beberapa tahun lalu dimana konser metal jarang sekali diadakan disini, kalau sekarang kan lebih aman dan banyak sekali band yang sudah mau manggung di Indonesia.

BERNICE: Menurut saya metal sekarang sedang dalam perkembangan yang luar biasa sih, setiap minggu ada aja band metal baru yang mengusung genre yg baru-baru juga. Apalagi dengan adanya internet dan kemudahan dalam membagi musik kita ke khalayak orang banyak, jadi sekarang kita bebas sekali dalam bermusik dan berkarya. Walau TV dan Radio kebanyakan di dominasi oleh aliran musik mainstream, tapi metal dan rock akan terus berkembang dan tidak pernah mati.
Rencana apa saja yang kalian persiapkan ke depan?
BERNICE: EP kita "When Autumn Ends" akan dirilis ulang dan didistribusikan di toko-toko musik besar di Eropa dan Amerika tanggal 18 dan 19 April nanti oleh label kita. Kita juga sedang promosi lagu-lagu Blodwen dan beberapa masuk ke radio-radio di UK, Amerika, Italia dan Kanada. Sembari itu berjalan, kita sedang proses pembuatan album kedua dan saya sedang menulis materi-materi baru untuk Blodwen. Album kedua ini akan rilis di bulan-bulan akhir 2014. What do you think of the development of metal music in this era? Lexy: The development of metal music today still think we're pretty good. BERNICE: our EP "When Autumn Ends" will be re-released and distributed in toko- major music stores in Europe and the United States on 18 and 19 April next by our label. While it's running, we are the process of making a second album and I'm writing new material for Blodwen. The second album will be released in the final months of 2014.
