Metallic Ass akhirnya mempersiapkan album terbarunya! Setelah beberapa waktu hampir tak terdengar kabarnya, kini mereka tengah menyusun materi untuk mengguncang ranah thrash metal lokal lagi. Diperkirakan bahwa sebelum pertengahan tahun ini, album terbaru mereka siap rilis.

Terkait dengan kesibukan dari masing-masing personelnya, band yang awalnya dibentuk di Jogja ini pun sudah resmi pindah markas ke Jakarta. Dengan sedikit perubahan formasi anggota dan konsep album yang nampaknya lebih berbeda, Metallic Ass nampaknya akan memberikan beberapa kejutan menarik.

Pekan lalu, saya mengontak sang vokalis, Denizone untuk meluangkan wawancara dengan Jurnal Headbanger (JH) di sela-sela kesibukan mereka. Daftar pertanyaan yang telah disusun akhirnya berhasil diisi oleh setiap personel tanpa mencontek. Sejak 2008, MA sudah dibentuk dan bertualang di berbagai gigs Jogja hingga akhirnya merilis EP yang sempat dibagikan gratis, lalu disusul album Thrash Metal 1983 (2011). Jika dihitung-hitung, jangka waktunya cukup lama untuk masuk ke dapur rekaman lagi. Situasi semacam apa atau ada kendala macam apa saja yang membuat para pendengar setia MA menunggu begitu lama demi kehadiran album ini?

DZ: Kalau untuk kurun waktu 2008-2011, bisa dibilang waktu itu tidak ada target apapun, semua mengalir begitu saja. nongkrong bareng, ngejam di studio ketemu riff dan tema, dan direkam. Baru muncul ide untuk merilis album juga belakangan setelah lagu-lagu yang terkumpul sudah cukup.

Untuk album yang kedua, kami lebih mengkonsep album ini untuk lebih matang di sela-sela kesibukan kami. Terutama saya yang sejak 2011 lebih banyak beraktivitas di Jakarta, sementara Khemal dan Yudi ketika itu masih stay di Jogja. Tentu itu merupakan salah satu faktor yang membuat proses berkarya kami menjadi agak lambat. Kondisi itu kami siasati dengan kirim-mengirim file rekaman via email ataupun whatsapp.

KL: Iya, kendala terutama dengan kesibukan kami masing-masing. Garis besar album kedua ini telah kami bahas di 2012. Dari waktu itu, kami sudah memiliki hingga 20-an demo songs yang kami buat masing-masing maupun jamming studio, namun karena kesibukan masing-masing keseluruhan materi baru terekam penuh sekarang.

YP: Di saat Denizone tidak berada di Jogja, saya dan Khemal keluar masuk studio untuk menggodog materi yang ada dan memaksimalkannya di saat Denison di Jogja, ditambah lagi kesibukan masing-masing personil, tapi kita menyiasatinya dengan komunikasi yang lancar sehingga album ini terkonsep dengan baik.

Apa saja sih kesibukan personel MA selain bermusik?

DZ: Saya bekerja di instansi pendidikan di Jakarta dan Tangerang Selatan

KL: Landau Post Pro, mengurus studio (recording, mixing & mastering) yang khusus saya dedikasikan untuk musik rock dan metal tanah air sejak 2012, termasuk tukang sapu dan tukang bikin kopi hehe..

YP: Kalau saya baru saja merampungkan kuliah di salah satu universitas swasta yang ada di Jogja

Boleh dong dibagi sedikit tentang beberapa perombakan yang sudah dialami di MA? Misalnya pergantian personel, siapa yang sekarang jadi personel tetap? Dan bagaimana dengan sistem manajemennya?

Perombakan personil menurut kami merupakan sesuatu yang wajar dialami oleh setiap band. Saat ini formasinya 3 orang yaitu DZ (vokal, bass), KL (gitar) dan YP (drums). Sejak 2008 sampai sekarang, personil MA yang masih sama yaitu DZ dan KL. Untuk manajemen kita dibantu oleh Ockie yang megelola administrasi dan jadwal gigs.

MA sekarang sudah resmi berpindah dari desa besar bernama Jogja ke ibukota Jakarta Raya, ada alasan umum dan khusus? Lalu, apakah ada faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi gaya musikalitas, terutama penulisan lirik?

DZ: Sebenarnya di Jogja maupun di Jakarta itu sama saja, mengingat dengan adanya perkembangan teknologi informasi, band dari pelosok desa manapun memiliki peluang yang sama untuk dikenal di seluruh dunia. Kalau alasan saya, jelas karena saya lebih banyak beraktivitas di Jakarta dibandingkan di Jogja.

Soal gaya musikalitas berpengaruh atau tidak, itu pasti. Sangat berpengaruh. Tapi berpengaruhnya seperti apa, nanti pendengar yang menilai saja.. hehe..

Terkait dengan lirik, ada perubahan yang signifikan dibanding dengan album pertama, dimana pada album kedua ini kami menyelipkan beberapa lagu dengan lirik bahasa inggris. Itu merupakan tantangan baru untuk saya dalam menulis lirik, disamping ini pertama kalinya saya menulis lirik di tengah iklim kota metropolitan yang bising dan kurang kondusif untuk berimajinasi.

KL: Karena aktivitas sementara ini memang di Jakarta.

Kami merespon distorsi sekitar pada saat proses kreatif, itu yang kami lakukan baik waktu di Jogja maupun Jakarta, berbeda tentu mengenai isi kepala dan waktu yang dinamis, semuanya kami pulangkan kepada yang mendengar nantinya.

YP: Tidak ada alasan, hanya aktivitas teman-teman ada di jakarta sekarang.

Apa kabarnya Goblig Ass? Kepindahan MA ke ibukota apakah juga berpengaruh ke Goblig? Misalnya lebih bersih dan wangi? Pernah terpikir untuk menciptakan karakter pendamping buat Goblig? Biar kesannya tidak jomblo, mungkin?

DZ: Kabar Goblig Ass baik, seperti biasa dia masih menjadi thrasher yang pro petani organik. Haha. Goblig Ass akan tetap hadir di album kedua nanti, penampilannya seperti apa, bisa dilihat nanti ketika album kedua kami sudah rilis hehehe..

KL: Haha.. dia akan tetap seperti biasa, mendalami ilmu hitam, meramu ramu-ramuan hingga ekplorasi pupuk, menjaga ketinggian, menentukan arah angin, rata-rata air hehe, dia terlalu sibuk untuk itu.

Di album Thrash Metal 1983, materi yang dikibarkan benar-benar khas Jogja, apakah album baru ini tetap menonggakkan bendera yang sama?

Kira-kira akan diberi tajuk apakah album baru MA, atau ada tema khusus yang dikemas di dalamnya?

Kami akan memberi tajuk album yang sedapat mungkin mewakili seluruh tema lagu yang ada di album ini. dan hampir pasti, masih menggunakan kata “Thrash” untuk nama albumnya.

Berapa lama proses penggodokan album ini? Di mana proses rekaman dan mixingnya?

Materi album ini sudah mulai dibuat sejak 2012. Untuk musiknya sudah direkam tuntas pada 2014. Proses perekaman dilakukan di Elssy Studio Jogja (Drum, Gitar), Studio pribadi di rumah DZ (Bass) dan Madhouse Studio Tangerang (Vokal). Untuk Mixing dilakukan di Studio KL, Landau Post Pro Jogja dan Mastering dilakukan di Madhouse Studio Tangerang dan dikerjakan langsung oleh KL.

Tahun lalu MA sempat mengunggah singel “Pelaut” di YouTube, apakah lagu tersebut adalah salah satu bocoran materi untuk album ini? Sekalian deh, ada bocoran beberapa judul lain untuk album barunya? Oiya, Labelnya dari mana ?

Betul, singel Pelaut merupakan salah satu materi dalam album kedua kami yang mewakili tema nasionalisme. Selain itu ada juga tema-tema keseharian lain seperti aktivitas minum kopi, pembegalan sepeda motor, tawuran antar geng dan beberapa tema-tema politik.

Terkait dengan label, sampai saat ini kami belum signed dengan label. Kami masih memprioritaskan karya kami jadi dengan maksimal terlebih dahulu, baru untuk distribusinya kami pertimbangkan nanti.

Kalau boleh dibandingkan ya, adakah keunikan atau perbedaan antara scene metal di Jogja dan Jakarta, dari sudut pandang MA?

DZ: Kalau menurut saya hampir sama sih ya..

Tren yang sekarang ini berkembang adalah rilisan fisik berupa boxset (CD, DVD, kaset, merch), ada rencana untuk mengemas dalam konsep serupa?
