Perlu sekitar 8 tahun bagi saya untuk mendapatkan album Bleeding Stump yang dirilis pada 2004 ini, bukan karena CD nya begitu sukar untuk didapat, melainkan keengganan sekian lama untuk memilikinya demi mendengar kabar bahwa di album ini, mereka telah berganti vokalis. Ya, sebagaimana luas diketahui di album kedua ini Total Rusak memang telah berganti penyiksa pita suara sementara saya telanjur kesengsem dengan karakter vokal band asal Padang ini di debut Exploding The Cranial yang CD-nya sempat dirilis Obliteration Record, Japan itu. Dalam ekspektasi saya, peralihan dari vokal deep guttural yang dalam taste saya benar-benar pas dan sesuai dengan sound serta karakter musik Total Rusak yang benar-benar ‘rusak’ akan amat sukar dibayangkan mampu menggantikan karakter kuat yang sudah terbangun.

Dan benar saja, ketika saya memutar CD ini pertama kalinya, rasa kecewa segera menyelimuti hati. Teknik bervokal Bambang, vokalis dalam album ini benar-benar berbeda. Bambang bervokal dengan ngeden, tradisi yang biasa pula dijumpai dalam skena musik hardcore dengan suara dada. Teknik bervokal yang membutuhkan power superprima sebenarnya, tapi justeru bagi saya membuat jadi capek mendengar. Namun begitu, musikalitas di album ini harus diakui amat prima, dengan drumming yang hyperfast dan powerful, sementara ritem guitar meliuk-liukan suara berdistorsi tajam dan tidak membikin boring. Saya ingat komentar teman saya yang memuji sound di album ini yang begitu mantap, dan saya membenarkannya. Sayangnya, D.A.P., bassplayer mereka di debut Exploding…tak lagi memperkuat band ini, sehingga bass di album ini diisi oleh Nova sang gitaris. Bagaimanapun, perangkapan dua instrumen oleh satu musisi membuat suatu karya musik akan sedikit banyak monoton karena kehilangan nilai sinergiknya.

Selain itu, band ini memiiki cacat yang jamak dimiliki oleh band pribumi: membawakan lagu berbahasa Inggris dengan grammar yang memprihatinkan. Sebenarnya hal ini bisa dihindari jika melibatkan language editor sebelum menjadi lirik yang benar benar matang dan siap saji.

Artwork? ini juga mengandung sisi minus. Kendati lebih baik daripada debut Exploding… yang hanya ‘taken from the internet’, cover album Bleeding Stump ini amat prima dan unik, memiliki karakter tersendiri. Sayangnya, penggunaan cover menganut asas minimalis, hanya selembar kertas yang dilipat jadi dua. Penggunaan foto personil juga terkesan asal, mengambil begitu saja, setidaknya fotonya berkesamaan dengan yang saya lihat di Exploding…. Cover, artwork memang tidak ada hubungannya dengan musik yang ada di dalam cakram rekam, akan tetapi bagaimanapun sebagai sebuah CD adalah sebuah merchandise, sebuah physical record yang juga memiliki fungsi memorabilia, ini tak boleh disepelekan begitu saja baik oleh band maupun oleh label yang merilisnya [MKW].
