Trend masyarakat dunia untuk kembali ke alam (back to nature) telah menyebabkan permintaan produk pertanian organik di seluruh dunia tumbuh pesat sekitar 20% per tahun. Sehingga, jika diperkirakan pada tahun 2010 pangsa pasar dunia terhadap produk pertanian organik mencapai U$ 100 milyar, maka bisa juga diperkirakan pada tahun 2020 akan mencapai hampir U$ 750 milyar (Ditjen BPPHP Deptan, 2001).
