Perang, kematian, pembantaian (atau berbau sejenisnya) adalah wacana yang lumrah untuk diangkat sebagai tema ben-ben death metal/grindcore. Namun, membuat satu album berkonsep dengan tema tersebut (khususnya di Indonesia) yang saling berkesinambungan sangat lah jarang. Adalah Dead Vertical lewat album teranyarnya, Perang Neraka Bumi terinspirasi dari sejarah Perang Dunia ke-II.

Pada 7 April lalu, unit gerinda yang terdiri dari Boy (vokal & gitar), Bonny (bas) & Arya (dram) merayakan launching album Perang Neraka Bumi di Bang Hoodie cafe, Pejaten. Usai pesta penuh gemuruh, kami menyempatkan waktu untuk berbincang dengan trio pendukung ganja tersebut... Hajar bleh!
Selamat atas peluncuran album Perang Neraka Bumi. Tapi, apa kendala yang membuat jeda rilisan album kali ini terlalu lama?
Boy: Kendalanya kebentur waktu sih. Kalau dulu kan era 2007/2008 anak-anak masih sering ketemu dan gw juga belum berkeluarga. Trus Boni kerja juga. Jadi, kita intens ketemunya di studio, latihan, trus pulang. Gitu aja… Jadi, kita briefingnya full di studio dan itu yang membuat agak lama.

Dead Vertikal (DV) sudah berjalan 10 tahun. Hal apa yang membuat kalian tetap bertahan?
Boy: Yang bisa bikin bertahan karena kekompakan kita bertiga sendiri. Dari niat idealis kita bertiga...

Idealisnya tuh apa?
Boy: Idealisnya tetap ciptain musik keras, hehehe.

Dewasa ini kalian menganggap ben itu seperti apa?
Boy: Jujur. Kalau berharap untuk uang sih agak susah ya, terutama ben underground Indonesia. Jadi, kita semua punya job sampingan untuk menopang kehidupan kita masing-masing. Cuma, gimana caranya kita tetap harus balance antara kerjaan, keluarga, dan ben. Ben ini kan udah kaya keluarga, jadi kita ada rasa saling memiliki.

Album kali ini terinspirasi dengan Perang Dunia ke-II. Apa yang memotivasi kalian membuat album berkonsep?
Boy: Karena tingkat kesulitannya. Kalau album konsep/epik itu kan lagu pertama sampai terakhir itu harus sambung-menyambung.

Trus, untuk mengenai data materi tersebut, kalian memerlukan waktu berapa lama?
Boy: Wah, kalau ngumpulin sih udah lama. Sekitar 2 tahunan. Bolak-balik nonton film, gituh.

Kenapa lagu “Inti Petaka” dianggap sebagai bonus track? Ghalibnya, sebutan bonus track itu untuk sebuah rilisan ulang, dsb. Apa karena tema lagu tersebut tidak sesuai dengan konsep album?
Boy: Ya. Kalau dari tema memang tidak sesuai. Itu sih buat persembahan buat fans/teman DV aja.

Rilisan album ini masih memakai label Rottrevore Records, yang mana owner dari label tersebut telah almarhum. Dengan menggunakan label tersebut, apa itu rasa tribut kalian pada mendiang dan seperti apa sih sosok Rio di mata kalian?

Boy: Waktu itu kita sudah deal dengan almarhum Rio. Engga lama sudah masuk stempel CD, dia (Rio) meninggal. Sedang album sudah jalan 90%, tinggal nungguin kover doang. Jadi, sebenarnya sebagai rasa respek aja sih.

Bonny: Kita banyak belajar dari Rio Genduts. Sebelum kenal dia, kita ngga ngerti dalam cek sound atau yang lainnya. Istilahnya, cuma ngeben-ngebenan.

Belakangan ini DV cukup gencar publikasi di media massa. Nah, pertanyaannya, menurut kalian perlu ngga sih media memasyarakatkan metal? Atau, perlu ngga ben-ben indie mendapat award?
Boy: Sebenarnya sih perlu. Cenderung audiens/konsumen di sini (Indonesia) itu menilai musik indie/underground levelnya belum bisa disamain dengan musik mainstream. Tapi, kenapa ngga melakukan semacam revolusi/perubahan itu? Karena banyak kok ben-ben indie/underground ngga kalah bagus dengan mainstream. Tinggal selera pasar aja sebenarnya. Memang pasar kita sesungguhnya belum kena di situ.

Nah, sebagai ben yang segmented, bagaimana strategi kalian membuat pasar itu sendiri? Apalagi banyak ben di sini ingin mendapat penghasilan dari nge-ben tapi nyatanya kan masih mimpi.

Boy: Yah, kalau strategi kita sih jangan pernah nyerah. Apa aja yang bisa dilakuin, semacam promo dan sosialisasi ke media-media. Walau tanggapannya gimana, yang penting kenalin dulu. Orang kan kalau ngga kenal ngga tau intinya apa. Kita memang ben segmented, tapi gimana caranya orang lain dengar itu bilang, “Wah, asik juga nih lagunya!” Jadi, kekuatannya ada 2; di promo dan di bandnya itu sendiri.

Ok. Pilih mana, ganja atau grupis?
Arya: [sambil bergaya menghisap rokok]… Ganja!
Bonny: Kalau pilih ganja, serem amat. Ntar jadi barbuk lagih! Grupis juga ngga kemana. Ya udah, ganja aja deh.
Boy: Samain aja deh!
