Saya rasa tidak terlalu berlebihan jika mengatakan kalau debut album Vallendusk – Black Clouds Gathering adalah salah satu rilisan black metal lokal terbaik di tahun ini. Hal keren lainnya dari Vallendusk adalah mereka juga memberikan sesuatu yang berbeda bagi skena black metal lokal, yaitu dengan menjadi salah satu band yang memainkan atmospheric black metal/post black metal. Sebuah sub genre yang sangat jarang diusung oleh band-band lokal yang para kebanyakan dari para pelakunya terlalu sibuk memperdebatkan apakah black metal harus Satanist atau tidak, serta terlalu sibuk mencetak sticker dan merch tanpa pernah sibuk menghasilkan sebuah rilisan yang baik.

Bisa kalian ceritakan awal terbentuknya Vallendusk dan apa arti nama Vallendusk sendiri?

Berawal dari obrolan soalmusik di salah satu forum pada bulan September 2011 timbul keinginan dari kami berempat untuk membentuk sebuah band dengan konsep musik yang berbeda dari band-band kami sebelumnya. Kebetulan kami berempat punya interest dan visi yang sama soal musik, hal tersebut membuat semuanya menjadi mudah dan nyaman bagi kami untuk komunikasikan ide-ide yang ada. Awalnya dari kata Fallendusk, huruf F kami ganti dengan V. Simboldari “Victory”, ini kami artikan sebagai momentum kemenangan dan kebebasan jiwa kami dalam bereskpresi seni dengan Vallendusk sebagai outlet-nya.



Bagaimana kalian bisa sampai bekerja sama kembali dengan Pest Production ketika merilis album Black Clouds Gathering?

Sejak awal Pest Production memang menunjukkan minat yang besarterhadap kami, setelah EP yang kami rilis bulan April tahun lalu mendapat respon yang sangat positif. Semua menjadi lebih mudah dan sangatlah wajar untuk melanjutkan kembali kerja sama dengan Pest Production untuk perilisan Black Clouds Gathering



Kalian mendapat tanggapan yang baik dari metalhead luar, apa kalian sudah memilki rencana untuk bermain di luar?

Terima kasih. Kami belum merencanakan apa-apa sejauh ini tapi bila kesempatan dan tawaran itu datang pasti kami terima dengan baik. We’ll just wait and see.



Di Indonesia tidak banyak band yang memainkan atmospheric black metal/post black metal bagaimana respon dari metalhead lokal terhadap album kalian?

Respon dari mereka sangat baik, walau memang belum begitu banyak dari segi jumlah. Bagi beberapa orang Atmospheric Black Metal adalah sesuatu yang baru di Indonesia. Senang rasanya menjadi salah satu bagian pembaharuan dan kebangkitan skena musik di tanah air. Semoga kedepan makin banyak lagi band-band di negeri ini yang mengusung konsep yang berbeda dan fresh, supaya tidak timbul stagnasi dan kejenuhan.


Album kalian Black Clouds Gathering juga dipasarkan di luar bagaimana dengan pendistribusiannya, apa lebih banyak di distribusikan di luar daripada di Indonesia sendiri?

Pest Production punya jalur distribusi yang tersebar merata di wilayah Asia, Eropa, dan Amerika. Dan untuk di Indonesia sendiri network pendistribusian album Black Clouds Gathering ini adalah melalui kami langsung, namun sementara ini stok yang ada di kami sudah habis terjual.



Ada rencana untuk membuat launching album Black Clouds Gathering?

Launching atau mini tour sepertinya menarik, namun belum ada sesuatu yang “fancy” telah kami set up dan rencanakan untuk saat ini.



Band-band black metal Eropa banyak yang menjadikan alam sebagai insipirasi musiknya, bagaimana dengan kalian apa kalian termasuk orang-orang yang gemar berpergian ke pegunungan atau semacamnya untuk mencari inspirasi?

Ya, beberapa orang diantara kami adalah penggiat alam aktif dan salah satu dari kami tergabung di klub mountaineering. Kami semua gemar bepergian kepegunungan dan wilayah hijau semacamnya untuk mencari inspirasi dalam bermusik sekaligus melepas penat dari segala macam rutinitas yang ada di kota. Musik dan alam adalah healing terbaik buat kami.



Menurut kalian sendiri seperti apa sebuah lagu atmospheric black metal yang baik?

Menurut selera kami secara personal, pondasi dasarnya tetap mengacu pada karakter sound Black Metal tradisional/ortodok-style secara umum. Dimana nuansa gelap dan dingin tetap dominan, namun detail riff tetap terjaga dan aransemen tidak monoton, dinamis dan minim repetisi riff. Ada interseksi part clean – akustik dan harmonisasi lain juga disitu. Last but not least important, setiap lagu diusahakan sebisa mungkin memiliki bagian closing/ending riff yang memorable, klimaks, dan epik.

Tanggapan kalian sendiri tentang perkembangan scene black metal di Indonesia sendiri sekarang ini?

Terlihat sudah bangkit kembali, rilisan juga mulai bertambah dalam 2 tahun terakhir walaupun memang belum pesat dalam hal jumlah. Harapan dan semangat optimis penggiat Black Metal nusantara memang semakin terasa belakangan, namun benturan terhadap ideologi, perbedaan paradigma antar komunitas, gimmik, distorsi kultur, bahkan politisasi akan tetap ada dan mewarnai scene Black Metal Indonesia hingga kedepannya.



Di bagian akhir lagu Land Of The Lurking Twilight terdengar suara seperti iringan musik penari kecak, apa alasan kalian memasukan suara iringan penari kecak itu sendiri ke dalam lagu itu?

Kecak punya intuisi magis dan imagery tersendiri yang memang sengaja ingin kami tampilkan sebagai bagian nuansa yang ada di track terakhir, Land of the Lurking Twilight. Jika diperhatikan mulai saat iringan penari kecak tersebit muncul, ada “build up tension in the midst of chaoticness” yang memang sengaja ingin kami bentuk disitu. Untuk selanjutnya dibawa perlahan-lahan menuju klimaks pada bagian ending (clean part). This is how the album “Black Clouds Gathering” supposed to end… A happiness of consciousness to feel within the chaos and in effect a gratefulness to exist. Perasaan yang sama seperti saat kamu melihat pelangi selepas hujan.



Menurut kalian apa kalimat yang tepat untuk menjabarkan musik kalian di album Black Clouds Gathering?

Berlari sejauh 10 kilometer dalam waktu 9-10 menit dengan luapan emosi disana-sini dan berakhir di garis finish dengan perasaan bahagia.


Siapa band yang menurut kalian banyak memberikan pengaruh selama pengerjaan album Black Clouds Gathering?

Yang sehari-hari kami dengar saja. Sangat banyak jika disebutkan, semuanya memberikan pengaruh secara langsung ataupun tidak (sadar).
Apa rencana kalian untuk kedepan?

Album / karya akan selalu menjadi fokus bagi Vallendusk.
